Hello,

Art draws from the abundance of the cosmos, and if we recognize this grace, it moves us towards adoration. This is why we must exercise imagination, perception, and play. Without the generous language of art Christians cannot successfully share benedictions, mediate on the mysterious, or make room in our lives for God, who we will one day experience as Absolute Beauty.

Art, therefore, is the proper language of adoration. The poet Oscar Williams believes it is through creative adoration we reach, the “very muscle of miracle,” easing the weight and length of Beauty into our small impoverished lives. In our technological age we need art to help us acclimate to Beauty’s continual pounding of abundant marvels.

Join us at IAF on Monday night where Steve Garber and friends further examine the grace of God’s abundance.

Sincerely,

Kenyon and Maria

I am a lecturer at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the founding executive director of Arts & Minds. Our mission is to improve well-being for the growing number of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias by providing high quality visual arts programs in art museums, senior centers and nursing homes. As a longtime uptown resident I am committed to bringing the healing power of art to underserved communities of Harlem and Washington Heights.

While Corpus Christi Church is my home parish, Redeemer has come into my life in important ways. Most recently, I have had the tremendous honor of being selected as the winner in the arts category of the Ei Business Plan Competition. This has been an amazing experience on so many levels! Now, Redeemer support is helping Arts & Minds to expand our programs and to develop our website, www.artsandminds.org, to be launched this Fall. Until then, email me or find Arts & Minds on Facebook.

My hope is for Arts & Minds to flourish and for new avenues of funding to open that will allow us to bring the power of art to more people in need.

City of Man: Religion and Politics in a New Era
Book by Michael Gerson and Peter Wehner
Foreword below by Tim Keller

In the mid-twentieth-century, H. Richard Niebuhr wrote his classic Christ and Culture, which helped mainline Christian churches think through ways to relate faith to politics. In the end Niebuhr came down on the side of universalism, the view that ultimately God is working to improve things through all kinds of religions and political movements. The result of his work was to lead mainline Protestant churches to become uncritical supporters of a liberal political agenda (though Niebuhr himself opposed such a move.)...
