Culture Club and Photography

On Friday evening, September 10, Redeemer professional photographer and educator Ryann Cooley will speak on the medium of photography in fine art and lead a tour through the International Center of Photography’s current exhibition, "Perspectives 2010: Carol Bove, Lena Herzog, Matthew Porter, Ed Templeton, Hong-An Truong." These artists not only examine and extend the use of the photographic medium, but also use it as a means towards social and philosophical commentary. We'll meet at the Redeemer offices at 6:00pm then walk over to ICP and view the exhibition from 7:00-8:00. Q&A with Ryann in Bryant Park afterwards. Suggested donation at the museum is $5 (at the door), but advance registration is required to join the group. Register here.

Save the Date

The October outing is a movie night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We’ll be viewing Norman Jewison’s portrayal of a wacky Brooklyn family in his 1987 classic Moonstruck. Film critic Almond White will interview the award winning director prior to the film’s showing. Surprise guests are expected. Join us for this Metropolitan Museum of Art lecture series on Friday October 8th, 6 pm. More information and registration to come.

Are you an arts patron? Take our quiz and find out!

The Culture Club creates opportunities to learn about and experience the range of arts events that New York City has to offer. In order to be renewers of culture, we need to be knowledgeable about and engaged in it. The arts are only one aspect of "culture," but they are important because they both reflect and influence the worldviews around us.

Every month or so, we attend a performance, exhibition, or other arts event. Each "outing" will have an educational component - we will send information about the event, and a Redeemer artist working in that art form will "host" the trip and lead a discussion. It's a great way to learn about the arts and have a new experience! Most events are appropriate for ages 13 and up.

We purchase group-priced tickets (up to 20% off of single ticket prices) in moderately-priced seating areas of each venue to allow everyone to be able to afford to be part of the group. Those who wish to buy more (or less) expensive tickets on their own are welcome to join us for the discussion and receive the educational material.

Because the number of tickets to these events is limited, we often do not announce the in the Redeemer bulletin and other church-wide communications tools. Join the Culture Club eNewsletter to be the first to know about all upcoming Culture Club events!
