Church Hopping: St. Patrick's Cathedral & St. Bart's Church

In church architecture, faith and art coalesce. If one observes carefully, he or she can discover in the ground plans of Romanesque cathedrals the shape of the Latin cross, symbolic of the Christian faith resting its foundations on the hope of the resurrected Savior. Looking up at the ceiling of a Greek Orthodox church, one may feel from the mosaic of Christ and the heavens inlaid in the domed ceiling that God is, indeed, close to us. In the stained-glass windows of Gothic churches, the illustrations of bible stories and the lives of the saints illuminate how we are to live. Today, school auditoriums and the back rooms of bars have become makeshift churches on Sundays, but the history of church architecture in New York City is rich and captivating.

In the past, Stephanie Nikolopoulos has gone Church Hopping with such esteemed Christian writers as Eric Metaxas (Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy), Donald Miller (Blue Like Jazz), Susan Isaacs (Angry Conversations with God), and Sally Lloyd-Jones (The Jesus Storybook Bible). She has traveled from Grand Rapids to report on the chapel at Calvin College to Minneapolis to see indie rockers The Hold Steady perform at the Basilica of St. Mary and over to Barcelona to see Gaudi’s majestic Sagrada Familia.

This summer she invites you to come along for live events in New York City, based on her column Church Hopping for Burnside Writers Collective. Whether you’re interested in art and architecture, faith, the history of New York, or are just looking for a fun way to spend a day, you’re invited to join us.

Artist and Educator Brian Fee will lead a tour of St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Bart's Episcopal Church. We'll meet at the Redeemer Office for a short presentation and then take the subway to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Please bring cash for church donations ($10-$20).
