The MBA Oath: Setting a Higher Standard for Business Leaders
- What if there were a Hippocratic oath for business? What if business people promised the equivalent of "do no harm"? Would it make a difference? The new dean of Harvard Business School and thousands of MBAs think it would. Do you agree?
- Redeemer's own Max Anderson, recent HBS grad, is one of the founders of the MBA Oath and co-writers of the newly released and nationally acclaimed book, The MBA Oath: Setting a Higher Standard for Business Leaders. Join us as we join forces with CFW's Financial Services Ministry to hear Max explain what the MBA Oath means, why it matters, and how it could shape the business world in the coming years. Max Anderson is the founder and chairman of The MBA Oath Initiative, a grassroots effort to establish a Hippocratic oath for MBAs and other business professionals. Launched in the spring of 2009, The MBA Oath challenges students and alumni of business schools to sign an online pledge committing themselves to principles of integrity, honesty, and fair dealing. Since it began, the oath has been signed by thousands of MBAs from more than 250 business schools. The movement has been covered in The New York Times, BusinessWeek, Bloomberg, The Economist, NPR, The Financial Times among dozens of other media outlets. Now Max has written, along with Peter Escher, a book about the movement, The MBA Oath: Setting a Higher Standard for Business Leaders. The book details the genesis of the oath, why it could make a difference, and how it can be applied to several real-world case studies.
Max was born and raised in Lakewood, Colorado. He left for the east coast to attend college at Princeton University, where he studied history. His life has taken many twists and turns since then. He has managed a political campaign, taught English at a university in Kazakhstan, sold rights to Mickey Mouse at Disney Books, served as a campus chaplain at Princeton, worked as a consultant at McKinsey, studied theology and worked on the staff of Redeemer Presbyterian church, served as preacher to a Korean church in Queens, advised Google on strategic partnerships, produced television shows for Charlie Rose, and managed a client service team at an institutional asset manager. He has appeared in a Oscar-winning best picture film and has won chili cook-offs in four states.
Max earned an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School and an MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School in 2009. He lives in New York City with his wife Jessica and their 1year old daughter.
